Chief Executive Officer
Bernard Mutinda Kivava serves as the Chief Executive Officer of SMEP Microfinance Bank PLC, bringing over 20
years of leadership experience in microfinance and retail banking across East Africa. He has held senior executive roles
at Juhudi Kilimo, Letshego Rwanda Limited, and Faulu Kenya, where he led Institutional transformation and financial
inclusion for the underserved communities.
His expertise spans strategy development & execution, governance & risk management, digitalization, policy, process &
product innovation, stakeholder engagement, resource mobilization, and the development of high-performance teams. At
SMEP, he is focused on business turnaround, strengthening institutional resilience, deepening customer trust, enhancing
operational performance, and advancing sustainable financial inclusion for micro, small, and medium enterprises.
Academic Qualification
Bernard holds an MBA in Strategic Management from the University of Nairobi, a Bachelor of Arts degree from Moi
University, and a Diploma in Business Management from the Kenya Institute of Management. He is a Certified Senior
Banking Executive in Microfinance and SME Banking Practice and a member of the Association of Microfinance
Institutions of Kenya.
